Veterans Day originated as “Armstice Day” and began on Nov. 11, 1919, which was the first anniversary of the end of WWI. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution for annual observance. Veterans Day became a national holiday, starting in 1938. Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans- living or dead. A number of celebrations are planned next week in Covington County.
Tues., Nov. 7
Red Level High School’s Veteran’s Day assembly will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the school’s auditorium. At 8 a.m., there will be a free breakfast offered to all veterans. The guest speaker for the event will be Steven Bailey, who retired from the Navy. Claudia and Bryson Pate will sing the National Anthem. For more information, call 334-469-5315.
Thurs., Nov. 9
Pleasant Home High School will observe Veteran’s Day with at 10 a.m. assembly at the high school. The guest speaker will be Larry Turnman, a retired Marine. There will also be a reception and refreshments following the program.
American Veterans (AMVETS) will lay flags on veteran’s graves in Opp beginning at 9 a.m. at various local cemeteries. To participate, go to the AMVET post in Opp.
Andalusia Junior High and High School will celebrate Veterans Day at the Andalusia High School auditorium starting at 9 a.m. The program will be run solely by students. The guest speaker will be James Preston. Following after the program, refreshments will be provided to all veterans.
Straughn High School and Opp High School will celebrate Veterans Day with the 2nd annual Salute to Veterans Concert at 6:30 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church in Andalusia. Straughn’s and Opp’s band will combine to perform.
Fri., Nov. 10
The Veterans Day parade will begin at 9 a.m. at the Andalusia High School stadium. The parade will end at the Covington County Veterans Memorial. High school bands from the area will be marching in the parade. Floats will represent each war fought, and veterans are invited to board a float beginning at 8:30 a.m. at AHS.
An official ceremony will follow at Covington County Veterans Memorial. The guest speaker will be Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., Chancellor of Troy University. All veterans and immediate families are invited to a reception at City Hall. The event is sponsored by the City of Andalusia and Area Chamber of Commerce.
