South Central Alabama Mental Health Center

South Central Alabama Mental Health Center employs 130 staff members and is certified by the Department of Mental Health / Mental Retardation. South Central is a comprehensive community mental health center serving Mentally Ill, Mentally Retarded, and Substance Abuse consumers for Butler, Coffee, Covington, and Crenshaw Counties. Andalusia is the Main Center for South Central and houses Administration, Business and Clinical Offices as well as Outpatient and Day programs. The Board also operates the Montezuma Facility, a 25,000 square foot facility.


The Mental Health Center provides an array of services for people who have mental illness and for those persons who experience difficulty in coping with life events.

The following mental illness and difficult situation services are offered: Assessment management, court liason and hospital evaluations, crisis intervention, geriatric services, group counseling, in-home intervention, psychiatric services, rehabilitive day program, therapeutic residential services.

An adult training center for people with intellectual disabilities is also available. However, because of strict State and Federal funding constraints and eligibility criteria, Intellectual Disabilities services are more limited than services in other program areas.

The South Central Alabama Mental Health Board’s Annual Public Meeting is held on the third Thursday of October at the Main Center.
