A full slate of events, highlighted by a production of "Our Town" will celebrate the local community next week.
The Covington County Schools Collaborative Arts program and ReAct Theatre and Arts are producing the Thornton Wilder play "Our Town" as a fundraiser for the Eric Lidh Memorial Scholarship at LBW Community College.
The idea was the brain child of Jennifer Withrow, who is directing the play, and a number of events were scheduled around the play to make the weekend a community celebration.
Military and First Responders Night and Community Tailgate
Andalusia High School will host Military and First Responders Night at its game against Carroll on Friday, Sept. 11, which also is the 25th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks. Military recruiters will be on hand, and First Baptist Church will host a community tailgate at 4:30 p.m. near the main stadium entrance.
First Baptist also will recognize first responders in its service on Sunday morning.
Harvest & Handmade Market
Aspen Bashore has coordinated a Harvest and Handmade Market planned on the Court Square from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12. The juried show includes handmade items, hand-crafted soaps, coffee, lemonade, baked goods, jewelry, food, crafts, and live music.
Covington Veterans Foundation Mural Dedication
The Covington Veterans Foundation will dedicate its new mural, Wall of Heroes, which recently was installed by artist Wes Hardin at Blue Bird Coffee Co. The dedication is set for 9:30 a.m. on Sat., Sept. 12.
CVF will present souvenir America 250 challenge coins to those in attendance.
Mural Walking Tour
Immediately following the dedication of the new mural, ReAct Theatre & Arts will host a walking tour of the city’s other murals, with narrators posted at each mural. This event is free. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes.
Our Town
Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play was a favorite of the late Eric Lidh, who taught speech, drama, and theatre at LBW Community College for more than 46 years. Proceeds of this production will help fund a memorial scholarship there in his name.
Set in the fictional small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, “Our Town” follows the Webb and Gibbs families as their children grow up, fall in love, marry, and face death. The minimalist play uses minimal props and a narrator known as the "Stage Manager," played by Brady Walker, to encourage the audience to appreciate the fleeting beauty of ordinary life.
Other cast members include Frank Shaffer, Luke Thompson, Xion Withrow, Logan Dumont, Lori Couturie, Sara Mixson, Ava Lawson, Atticus Withrow, Brevyn Jowers, Kathryn Thompson, Sarah Kate Rhodes, Kevin Kennedy, Loretta Black, Kim Kilgore, Kimbro Foreman, Gabe Jones, Shannon Glenn.
Ensemble cast members are Lily Clark, Noelle Perrin, Lane Ganous, Greysen Hancock, Barbara Peek, Hayden Johnson, Ayden Kelley, Bri Cowan, Brayden Jowers, Cindy Lathrom, Monica Bougafa, Emma McClung, A.J. McClung, xElla Robinson, and William Worley.
